Toni Ramos, 93, Milwaukee, WI, was born to eternal life on Friday, May 7, 2021, at home with her children at her side.Toni was born May 10, 1927 in Eastland, Texas, the daughter of Carlos Mata Sr. and Felicitas Jimenez. She married Fructuoso “Tocho” Ramos in December of 1948. Tocho was a musician and singer and together they formed a union in which they raised a family. Together they participated with their church choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. Their home was forever filled with music, song, singing duets in harmony together, laughter and love. Tocho was born to eternal life way too soon in 1978.

Toni was a strong spirited woman. When she put her mind to accomplishing something she did. She thrived in doing what she loved. Toni became a pioneer and personality in the area of broadcasting in the Milwaukee area. She hosted her radio program, “Siempre con Usted” for 30+ years on WYMS having started with WUWM. She conducted fundraisers to keep Public Radio going for the Hispanic Community. She participated as Mistress of Ceremonies for Fiesta Mexicana for many years. She was thrilled to present Latino artists and learning more about them through her interviews with them. Toni was often seen in parades in the Hispanic community, for which she was proud to represent.

Toni worked for many years as an Instructional Assistant for the Milwaukee Public Schools. While there she worked in the classroom helping her students learn.  She taught students to perform in school plays and cultural events. Teaching them to sing and dance and to appreciate their cultural roots. Toni would go on to win the #1 Instructional Assistant national award through the National Association of Bilingual Education in 1996. This was a competitive selection process. She became the # 1 in the country. Toni was presented this prestigious award at the NABE convention in Orlando Florida. Having put Milwaukee on the national map in the area of education Mayor Norquist would present a Proclamation declaring Friday, March 8, 1996 the city’s “Toni Ramos Day”.

Toni received numerous other awards, trophies, plaques, certificates of appreciation and for her volunteer work, that today fill walls in her home. She was proud of all she accomplished and what she did for the Hispanic community.

Toni enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, shopping, fashion and gardening. She had a “green thumb” and could make a garden come to life with color. For her birthdays and Mother’s Days she would enjoy potting plants and filling her yard with beauty. She also loved Roosters and had an extensive collection. For her the rooster’s early morning crow was a sign of a new day for which she gratefully thanked God.

She was a loving wife to Tocho and mother to her children.

Survivors include her children, Toty (Janis) Ramos, Gloria (Susan) Ramos, Hector (Cori) Ramos.

She was preceded to everlasting life by her parents, siblings: Eufemia Rogelio, Carmen Castillo and Carlos Mata Jr. and her beloved husband Tocho.

Services will be held on Friday, May 14th, 2021 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish with a Visitation beginning at 10:30am followed by Mass at 11:00am. A private interment for immediate family will follow.
